Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT (BOB) W. BURKARD
On May 8, 2026, Bob passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre with his family by his side.
Bob was a teacher, hunter, curler, gardener, avid reader, and Mr. Fix-it. He never hesitated to help family, friends, and neighbours. He was very knowledgeable about many subjects and could tackle and fix things big or small. He spent countless hours with his grandchildren showing them how to ride bikes, shoot targets, work on their cars, and build things. His great-grandchildren loved his homemade bran muffins. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the loves of his life and brought him immense joy.
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Julia; his son Brett; daughter Bobbie (Gerald) Mack; grandsons, Dylan (Allie) Schau, Jesse (Chloe), and Jacob (Masha) Mack; granddaughter Jude Burkard; and great-grandchildren, Jaedace, Zaelynn, and Tevon. They all loved their grandpa and papa Bob. Bob is also survived by his sister Debbie (Ric) Burman; in-laws, Rita, Tony (Irene), Diane (Don), Walter, and Ginny (Bryon); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Thank you to Riverview Palliative Care staff; home care staff (especially Nicole, Crystal, and Olivia); friends Ronnie and Roger with whom he spent countless hours discussing a myriad of topics; lifelong friends Gary and Lorna; and our wonderful neighbours on our bay. Their support and kindness has helped us tremendously.
I would especially like to thank our children Brett, Bobbie, Gerald and the rest of the family for being there with their unconditional love and support.
Bob’s wishes were to have no service. An informal gathering of immediate family and friends will be held at a later date. For those who wish to honour Bob’s memory, donations would be greatly appreciated to Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Music Therapy Program, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4.

Bob was my math mentor when I first started teaching. He later became my hunting mentor. I owe him greatly. I miss the long philosophical talks we had about teaching, politics, hunting, religion, finance, cars, and everything else during drives to hunting locations. I often remember these chats even now. Thanks Bob. Ray Kenny - Posted by: Ray Kenny (Friend and colleague) on: May 19, 2026

I had the pleasure of working with Bob at Garden City Collegiate. He was a great math teacher. Students loved the way he taught math. Bob always had a good hunting story to tell or a funny joke. He provided the Math Dept. with a positive view of life. My condolences to the Burkard family. - Posted by: Tom Melnyk (colleague) on: May 17, 2026

Bob and I worked together for 12 years at Garden City Collegiate. His stories, his sense of humour, his DIY tips and his good nature were a welcome part of every day. - Posted by: Gordon Cameron (Colleague) on: May 16, 2026

Mr. Burhard was my science teacher and curling coach at Gimli Composite High School. I still remember being in his class learning Physics and every once in a while I'll use those formulas and think of Bob. He was responsible for me getting involved in curling and drove us to many provincial play downs. Sometimes you don't get a chance to thank those who helped you get to where you are but I hope somehow this does Thank you Mr. Burkhard.. - Posted by: Glenn Albertson (Former student in Gimli) on: May 16, 2026

It's amazing how time has passed. I still treasure our trip to the range in your Jeep, and your ideas on rust control. I hope you're taking advantage of the good shooting in heaven. Rest in peace Bob! - Posted by: John Evan (Ex shooting club member) on: May 16, 2026
